Webguide4 with Streaming Live TV

I am a big fan of Webguide and Doug Berrett has added live TV streaming to the application.

So you can use it as a software extender (as you can with Orb). I have not tried the streaming part yet, I can't wait to give it a go.

Don't forget you will be able to vote for Webguide as the best free Media Center Application in the Media Center Show Awards later this week

Well done Doug, and I will be getting Doug back on to the show in the future.

The Media Center Show Extra #4 - Z

This week on the show I look at the “Z” sample application in the Windows Media Center SDK (v5.0)

Z is a complete end-to-end sample application that really shows off the power of Media Center Markup lanungage. You get the source code to the whole application in the SDK. I hope it not only inspires developers to get developing with Media Center but content companies too, they will be able to see the potential for getting there brand to the TV

For more info checkout Charlie Owen’s blog post and you can download the SDK from HERE

Have a look at the Media Center Show Extra Survey and let me know when you think of the show

This has all the documentation for developing Media Center applications and samples applications Q and the wonderful Z

Fantastic New Media Center Sample Application Shows the Power of Media Center Markup Language

Microsoft have a new sample application with that really shows the power of Media Center Markup Language. The application called Z shows virtually a whole new UI for Media Center highlighting how developers can use this technology to make there own apps.

The potential for fantastic new applications is amazing.

The slickness and visual eye candy is wonderful, the developers have done an amazing job of highlighting the possibilities of Media Center, including a Folder viewer for music files (something lots of people have asked for), and a download manager (with complete source code!)

The application is a fictional company called Z that offers Movies, TV and Music, and it really shows you what could be done. See the screen shots bellow, its amazing and I really hope that some content companies see this and wake up to the fact that Media Center presents a real opportunity to get content in to the digital home via the TV and the 10 foot interface.

Not only is it a great looking application, Microsoft have given away the source code, so you can look over the code and see how its done.

I must really commend the team at Microsoft for doing this application, it serves the purpose of showing the capacities of MCML, show developers how its done with the source code and inspiring developers and users a like.

I must also compliment Thomas Hawk and the wonderful pictures included in the application.

Download it with the rest of the SDK HERE  and more details on the Media Center Sandbox blog

Big Screen Blog: Rant: The 'Hidden' Goodness of Vista Media Center

Well done Nial, he has a rant about a lot of people missing the point about Vista Media Center and the development opportunities. There will be some fantastic new applications for Media Center, Nial himself has developed some great programs.

MCML is how Microsoft develop Media Center, and its not all assembly code, its XML. Some great stuff is coming out and I am in total agreement with Nial

I think a lot of people just don't really get what Vista is all about - and its very much a case of what you 'dont see' that makes it such a powerful platform. To (mis)quote Jim Allchin's interview on Channel9 - 'Users wont realize for 3-4 years just how powerful the new underlying security features are in Vista - because they wont see it'..

One of the most important 'hidden' features for me of Vista is the way it empowers developers to be able to create incredible software - by providing an awesomely powerful platform, API's and developer tools. This is an area which I believe Microsoft have really dominated over the past 10+ years - and I personally believe one of the reasons they have more or less wiped out the competition.

NIVEUS MEDIA READIES FOR WINDOWS VISTA LAUNCH, OFFERING CABLECARD PROGRAM FOR EXISTING CUSTOMERS

Bringing CableCARD capabilities to new and existing customers, Niveus Media continues to expand its forward-thinking media center solutions.

Long Beach, CA – EHX Fall – November 15-17, 2006 – Booth # 1313D – A leading designer and manufacturer of digital entertainment solutions based on the Windows Media Center platform, Niveus Media announces the implementation of a CableCARD program for the company’s Niveus Media Centers. Allowing existing customers the opportunity to augment the company’s preceding models, all Niveus products will be able to offer the latest Windows Vista operating system with CableCARD capabilities.

Concurrent with Window’s anticipated January 30, 2007 launch of Vista, along with Niveus' continued commitment to offer the latest in hardware and software, Niveus proudly encourages customers to embrace CableCARD technology within the Windows Media Center application. With unprecedented functionality, CableCARD allows users to view and record premium high definition digital content without the use of a set-top box, leveraging powerful DVR functionality including a robust electronic program guide.

“Niveus has been fortunate to showcase CableCARD capabilities and applications on our award-winning media centers, receiving overwhelming feedback on its benefits in this category. By extending this promotion to all of our customers, we hope to maintain our growing reputation as a forward-thinking provider of the digital entertainment experience,” states Tim Cutting, CEO and co-founder of Niveus Media.

With the convergence of computing and audio/video constantly evolving, Niveus Media has provided investment protection for its high-performance media centers in its unique chassis and upgrade programs. As Windows Vista supports OCUR (Open Cable Uni-directional Receiver), Niveus provides a seamless process; CableCARD can be easily inserted into an OCUR receiver. Niveus will be amongst the first to provide a Windows-based system capturing advanced content and capabilities by enabling users to retain the interactive EPG (electronic program guide), while also allowing them to view and record HD digital cable content that is stored and accessed on a Windows Vista-based Media Center system.

In addition to offering a CableCARD program for existing customers at the Windows Vista launch, Niveus also plans to ship all new CableCARD-enabled systems at that time.

Niveus Media will be demonstrating their Windows Vista-based products at this week’s Electronic House Expo (EHX) in Long Beach, CA. For more information on Niveus Media, Inc., or the Get Ready program, please visit www.niveusmedia.com.
